Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal each need a victory to finally meet at the U.S. Open.

Despite her level of play visibly dropping once she returned, Keys remained aggressive and continued to control all the rallies, leaving Vandeweghe very frustrated.

The only concern for Keys was a medical time-out she took late in the match, returning to the court with strapping on her right thigh. "In the end she won more points than I did and that's what it added up to".

The meteoric rise of Sloane Stephens continues.

Madison Keys and CoCo Vandeweghe have started the second all-American matchup of the night in the U.S. Open women's semifinals.

Not since 1981 have there been four American women in the final four at the U.S. Open, when the quartet was champion Tracy Austin, runner-up Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Barbara Potter.

She will face either No. 15 Madison Keys or No. 20 CoCo Vandeweghe.

A first-time career Slam champion is assured with Keys and Vandeweghe also having gone no deeper than a Slam semi-final.

Now 83rd, Stephens is the lowest ranked Slam finalist since unranked Justine Henin at the 2010 Australian Open and the lowest at the US Open since unranked Kim Clijsters won the 2009 title. "We played some incredible points in the third set".

Sloane Stephens took the first set 6-1 against a mistake-prone Venus Williams in the U.S. Open semifinals.

After two of the most one-sided sets you are ever likely to see in a Grand Slam semi-final, Williams threw everything she had at Stephens in the decider. Williams gave her plenty of help with 17 unforced errors and double-faulted for one of Stephens' two breaks of serve.

Del Potro, who saved two match points to defeat sixth seed Dominic Thiem in a fourth-round thriller on Monday, has been plagued by injury ever since his moment in the NY spotlight eight years ago. Williams was the first, in 1997.

The match didn't start well for Williams.

It was another case of so near and yet so far this year for the evergreen Williams, who was beaten in the final of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon nine years after her last grand slam title.

Vandeweghe, seeded 20th, reached her only prior Slam semi in January's Australian Open while 15th seed Keys made her lone last-four major at the 2015 Australian Open.

"We're going to have four American women playing tomorrow, and that's pretty awesome", Keys told the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, drawing a roar of approval. Federer can change that by winning his quarterfinal against Juan Martin del Potro later Wednesday.

The younger American's defence was extraordinary, but it was matched by the resilience of Williams who twice recovered a break.

It's the sixth time the longtime rivals have been a victory apiece from meeting at the U.S. Open, the only major where they've never played.

But a final break from the American for a 4-2 lead in the second set proved decisive and the match was hers when Pliskova buried a return into the net.

American Dana Mathewson and Aniek van Koot the Netherlands then upset women's No. 2 seeds Yui Kamiji of Japan and Lucy Shuker of Britain 0-6, 6-4, (10-5).
