Philadelphia Eagles sign K Jake Elliott

Even as one of the league's best placekickers, Sturgis may not return if his replacement, Jake Elliott, performs well for Philadelphia. With Sturgis sidelined for a while, the Eagles will hold workouts with a handful of kickers this week.

Elliott's signing is a reactionary move.

Elliott was a fifth-round pick in April after graduating from Memphis as the school's all-time leading scorer with 445 points. He was expected to be their kicker this season, but struggled during the preseason and lost out to veteran Randy Bullock. He made 81 of 104 field goals. If Sturgis goes on injured reserve, the Eagles would not be able to activate him for eight weeks.

Last season, Sturgis hit 35 of his 41 attempts and he sailed three field goals through the uprights during Sunday's win against Washington after missing the teams' first extra point.

He enjoyed a terrific season previous year. In 2015, he was 18 of 22 in 13 games.
