Good news today for those of you who use the Nintendo Switch Online app as it has received a well-needed update today.

Still, it is encouraging to see Nintendo update the app further - and there's still plenty of time until the company begins charging for its Switch online service. You can switch to other apps and continue chatting with your teammates, and even lock your phone to save it from burning battery or cutting your chat off in the middle of a crucial match. Due to numerous issues that were either heinous design oversights or stupid design decisions, using the app was arguably worse than not using anything at all and just playing Splatoon 2 with your friends without voice chat. Voice chat with other Switch players can now continue even in sleep mode or with other apps open. Lacking in features, underbaked in finish, Martin described the experience of using the Switch companion app as "almost aggressively limited". This kind of basic, background functionality really shouldn't have taken about two months to add to an app that came four months after the console's launch, especially when everything from Skype to Discord already had the same capability.
