Jim Schwartz responds to report he's aiming for Doug Pederson's job

There's a reason Schwartz was not interviewed for the Eagles' head coaching vacancy when they hired Pederson a year ago, even though he was unemployed in 2015.

The report, which is grounded in both Schwartz's relationship with vocal Pederson critic and current Ringer contributor Michael Lombardi as well as quotes from anonymous players and assistant coaches, depicted Pederson as a coach unaware that there could be a coup brewing just outside his door.

McLane's story connected Schwartz to Michael Lombardi, a former National Football League executive who hired the Birds' coordinator as a scout more than three decades ago and maintains a relationship with Schwartz.

Two early touchdowns gave the Eagles a 13-point lead in the second quarter, however, it wasn't enough as the Redskins found the end zone twice in the second quarter to briefly take the lead. "Will they throw away 2017 by stubbornly sticking to the Pederson Principle?"

"And yet, Eagles coaches and players have made the link".

"I'll say this, and I'll say this unequivocally", Schwartz told the team's website Tuesday. It was an arranged marriage - Pederson did not have much of a relationship with Schwartz before the two were hired - and Pederson called Schwartz the head coach of the defense.

Whew, there's a lot of moving parts to this. Just all week we kept talking about it and talking about it. Still, fantasy owners will go out of their way to draft a top-tier defense over a intriguing bench player simply because of the hype that surrounds these respected units in reality.

"I am very comfortable in my relationship with Doug Pederson, and I know he's comfortable in his relationship with me", said Schwartz, whose defense shined in Philly's 30-17 win over the Redskins on Sunday. What I do here is, I work extremely hard to execute the defense the way he has outlined it for me, OK? "And not everybody is privy to those instructions". So if anybody misunderstands or misinterprets any actions, just know this: "Coach Pederson is aware of everything I do in this building [and] outside the building".

The Eagles now travel to Kansas City to take on former head coach Andy Reid, and his Chiefs, at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. That's magnified when one assistant is a former head coach himself. And it had nothing to do with anything but having my personality and he embraced that.

"Look, I can be brash, check". "Check. I can be in your face". "That's the only way I know had to coach defense".

Referring to cornerback Ronald Darby going down with an ankle injury in the second quarter, Pederson was pleased with the way fellow teammates Jaylen Watkins and Jalen Mills were able to step up and fill in the gap.

However, Polian dismissed any speculation about how Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and the front office view Pederson as agenda-driven narratives conceited by a potentially vindictive agent. We saw almost the same thing play out when then 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula seemingly privately lobbied for the team's head coaching job when Jim Harbaugh was still in that role back in 2014. You know we got to eliminate some stuff.

Despite Schwartz's words to the contrary, this is most definitely something to keep an eye on as the season progresses in Philadelphia. Three players, who requested anonymity, said that it has become well-known in the locker room that Schwartz is waiting to usurp power.
