Cristiano Ronaldo scores another spectacular training goal

Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Real Madrid's first team on Wednesday night against Apoel Nicosia and he will do so with his popularity among the club's supporters at an all-time high.

As you can see in the video above, Ronaldo is in fine form ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Apoel FC on Thursday. That was their second successive home draw after a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia a fortnight earlier, and another game where Madrid paid for a lack of bite in the opposition penalty area.

While Messi retains the edge in terms of Ballon d'Or triumphs, Ronaldo claimed the 2016 award and looks certain to repeat in 2017 after Madrid won the Champions League and La Liga last season, MailOnline reports. He will play tomorrow but will still be serving his ban on Sunday.

Back-to-back victor Zidane once again has history in his sights as he aims to become the first manager in the history of the European Cup to win the continent's showpiece spectacle three times on the spin.

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City avoided tougher options by being drawn into top-seeded Shakhtar's group. They have also only kept five clean sheets in those 36 matches.

- This is the first game in European competition for RB Leipzig, and therefore their first encounter with Monaco.

It has not always been that way for the 32-year-old.

- Dries Mertens has been directly involved in seven of Napoli's last 10 Champions League goals (five goals, two assists).

"I am not going to revolutionise what I want to do with this team due to one bad game", Zidane insisted afterwards.

Even without their young star, Madrid should have more than enough in their squad to win this one at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Blues were the last English side to lift the trophy after their success in 2012, while four years prior there were three Premier League clubs left at the semi-final stage, with Manchester United eventually defeating Chelsea in the competition's first ever all-English final. Advancing to the knockout stage should be a formality for his new team, which also include teenage striker Kylian Mbappe in a new-look and exciting forward line.
