BMW M8 GTE racer unveiled

And to do that, it'll need the M8 to be an incredible auto. We're guessing the production auto will be a fair bit porkier than that...

The BMW M8 GTE has been developed using the latest technology, including 3D measurement technology and a new algorithm for engineers to increase the number of simulations in wind-tunnel development.

The M8's design is centred on the classic long-bonnet coupe silhouette, with enough room up front to mid-mount the twin-turbo V8 unit used in the race auto.

Yep, the Bavarian marque is heading back to Le Mans and endurance racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and North America's IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with this, the M8 GTE. As such, the M8 GTE weighs in at 1,200kg.

BMW last competed at the iconic event in 2011 with the M3 GT2, and won the race outright in 1999 with the V12 LMR. No images have been released but bosses are expecting the GTE to makes its racing debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January next year.

The engine is restricted by BMW in both size and power to meet FIA GTE performance requirements.

Nestling in that mean-looking front-end is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.

Set to go up against Ferrari, Ford, Aston Martin, Porsche, and Chevrolet, BMW ultimately hopes to win at Le Mans. We can't wait for the M8 GTE to hit the track.

"With the BMW M8 GTE, we are bringing cutting-edge technology to the top worldwide class of GT racing, whilst at the same time tying in with our tradition at Le Mans", commented BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.

It's not the "8" we'll see on the street, but the M8 GTE program has run parallel with the road car's development and more accurately portrays the production model than the 8-Series concept we saw earlier in the year.
