On September 19, 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, starting what would become at times a very public and contentious split.

Jolie proudly posed with children Maddox, 16; Pax, 13; Zahara, 12; Shiloh, 11; Vivienne, 9, and Knox, 9, and activist Un, plus the film's stars Kimhak Mun and Sareum Srey Moch on the red carpet. "I guess I am a little bit stronger", the actress, director and philanthropist tells PEOPLE exclusively in an interview for the magazine's new cover story. "We've all been a bit in lockdown and going through some things".

"We all need to do, I think, even more than we've ever done because we're at a very dark time".

The 42-year-old has been busy promoting her new Neflix film First They Killed My Father, out Friday, Sept. 15.

"I have had my ups and downs". "We all have our hard times, but as a mother you also have a responsibility first and foremost towards the kids", she explained.

Speaking about how the movie came about, Jolie said she and Loung penned the script years ago and they finally decided to make the movie keeping in mind Maddox's role in the movie.

"We homeschool and I'm very very aware of their education, mostly very aware of what's lacking". "They love her, she is family", she said.

Brad Pitt's former wife, however, said that she waited until her eldest son was ready to make the film, which is based on Loung Ung's memoir of the same name. The brothers actually worked behind-the-scenes on the new film alongside their mum. "They're the best friends I've ever had". "And that's O.K., because I know who I am, and the kids know who I am".

"It took me a few months to realize that I was really going to have to do it".

'I did start to get into acting and I did it partially because it was something to do with my mom and it made her so happy, ' she said.

Angelina Jolie attends the premiere of First they Killed my Father at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto. Now I do it for my kids.
