The agenda of the session for the year includes a number of provisions for serving the tourism sector in all member states, including the approval of the guidelines for the adoption of the draft of World Tourism Organization Convention.

The WTO celebrations of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 will also be discussed, as well as holding a special session on smart tourism.

The Georgian Vice Premier also spoke about the important agreements reached during Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili's visit to Iran, which contribute to the development of trade-economic ties between the two countries.

Addressing the opening session of the 22nd session of the UNWTO General Assembly, he said, despite the challenges faced by global tourism, the sector was "more committed than ever to working closer together to make it a pillar of a better future for people and the planet". "I feel very proud to have contributed to expanding the capacity of travel and tourism to the progress of the SDGs that guide our common action to 2030".

The 22nd General Assembly will approve candidacy for the post of UNWTO Secretary-General for the period 2018-2021.

"It also gives one a closer access to the world tourism organisation and the way it works and it will be a good leverage for Nigeria".

"The WTA will serve as a platform for global tourism cooperation and exchanges".

The Iranian Vice President underlined Iran's interest in Georgia's tourist potential.

"To advance, the tourism sector should decouple growth from environmental harm; fight climate change throughout the entire tourism value chain; measure the impacts of travellers every day accurately and regularly, and promote accessibility for all", stated Rifai. "We need to take local communities into account", said Rifai.
