Qualcomm Tease Apple: Android Always First To New Features

If you've been following recent Apple rumors and leaks, you know that those are all things we expect to see spread across the new iPhones that the company will unveil tomorrow.

The timing of the post is very interesting given Qualcomm and Apple are now a part of a massive legal fight dealing with patent licensing fees and antitrust laws.

Qualcomm points out that the first bezel-less design came in Xiaomi's 2016 Mi Mix, which has since been taken up widely in the industry. Qualcomm is one company who has been in legal disputes over technological patents with Apple, which is why they did their part in dampening the hype around the next iPhone. For example, under Iris Authentication/Facial Recognition, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is listed. First, the company wanted to share a list of its previous implementations in the mobile arena.

Nonetheless, Qualcomm's efforts have surely made the Android platform and the smartphone platform on the whole a better one compared to ones that existed a few years ago. Lastly, I don't quite understand how it's fair to include a non-commercial "Qualcomm Reference Design Handset" in any of these categories, but hey. In a blog post, the chip maker made a list of smartphone firsts that took place on Android phones thanks to Qualcomm technology. But Apple's response is always that it doesn't aim to be first and that it only ships features when they're up to the company's standards.

Meanwhile, on the blog post published on Monday, Francisco Cheng, director of technical marketing said it has "enabled some notable world firsts on Android, and some remain Android exclusives to this day".

We're working on inventing the next set of world firsts and collaborating with partners across the industry to get them into your hands, on a band around your wrist, or with lenses for over your eyes. We're pretty sure that Apple will claim "innovations" again when their new phones come out, but Qualcomm did not do itself any favors by getting some of the facts wrong. From the popular dual camera system to the fastest Bluetooth 5 to the bezel-less display, Qualcomm shows that all of them have been done first on the Android platform before being taken forward by "other platforms".
