With the wild success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds-10 million sold and 1 million concurrent players-folks have been waiting for the next release in the newly-minted Battle Royale genre. Today, we have the first real homage in the form of a new mode for Epic Games' Fortnite. Unsurprisingly, the victor will be the last combatant left standing. And unlike Motor Wars, the connection to PUBG has been made explicit.

Players will be able to construct and place deadly traps to slay their competition, and building defensive structures will be just as much a crucial part of the late-game as it is in Fortnite's standard PvE mode.

This is the first time that PvP has been included in Fortnite. Current owners of the game can play play Battle Royale in the special Public Test which is set to run from now until launch. The team behind Unreal Tournament began experimenting with this mode, and appear be the ones who shall carry it forward. This game mode will come to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC/Mac and will see 100 players being dropped into a giant map where their combat and building skills will be put to the test.
