The Hoover Dam, on the border of Arizona and Nevada, provides water and electricity for Las Vegas - but 275 people have died there in a decade.

An "adrenalin junkie" from north Wales has been fined by police in America after swimming across the Colorado River at the Hoover Dam. The authorities would have been able to identify him from his tattoo which says "no regrets".

"When I got to the Hoover Dam I just thought. you only live once, no regrets", Hughes told Fox News, saying he and 10 of his friends were having a "stag do", or bachelor party.

"We made a decision to go and see the Hoover Dam and on the way there, me and my friend were sat in the back of the pick-up". "I knew I had to get to the other side", he said.

The feat took him from Nevada to Arizona and took around half an hour. "The water was pulling me in toward the dam".

He was led away in handcuffs before being fined £250 - but escaped jail because he was "the only person who had ever achieved it".

For him, he said the experience was the Welsh version of the movie, "The Hangover".

Cops scribbled his offence down on a ticket as: "Jumping, diving, swimming from dam's spillways or other structures".
