"The call went out that we were headed out to Houston to help the animals in any way we could for the people and fosters were just coming out of the woodwork." said Jennifer Shorey, Director of Operations.

Jackie Armour, president of Springdale-based Paws Across Pittsburgh, said that her network of dog boarders will take four of the dogs. "Definitely keep them inside where you can get to them if something bad does happen".

Ellis said endangered animals and overcrowding can all be avoided.

Staff members from Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe returned to the center September 5 with 65 dogs and cats of all ages, who were rescued by Operation Pets Alive! and other Houston shelters to make room for animals that were displaced as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

Start by mapping out possible evacuation routes and compiling a list of places where you can stay with your animals if you must quickly leave your home. Each animal McKamey rescues from these hurricane zones will have a spacious kennel, soft bed and veterinary care but what they need most is a forever home.

The dogs will be ready for adoption in about a week.

The Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team on Friday sent a truck loaded with more than 1,000 pounds of donated pet supplies to the San Antonio, Texas, Humane Society. We worked directly with the shelters to take animals out of the shelters for those who were displaced. They were all sheltered or in foster homes. PETA's rescue crew is on the ground in Port Arthur with a boat, food and supplies and has already rescued several families, dogs who were stranded in water up to their necks and even an armadillo.

"For every animal you adopt you're saving the animals life and you're also saving the life of the animal waiting to come in".

Local and national pet rescue professionals and volunteers have sprung into action to help save the lives of pets left homeless and in danger following the ravages of Hurricane Harvey.
