Elsewhere, American CoCo Vandewedge reached the US Open quarter-finals for the first time after beating Lucie Safarova 6-4 7-6 (2).

She kept her composure and joined No. 9 Venus Williams, No. 20 Coco Vandeweghe, and unseeded Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals. On Monday night, Madison Keys made it four.

Keys said: 'I think it's great. "I was just trying to stay in my zone as long as I can and didn't wait for the moment where she can maybe get back in the match". "I'm really happy that none of us are playing each other in the quarter-finals".

Williams will face No. 13 seed Petra Kvitova and Stephens faces No. 16 seed Anastasija Sevastova on Wednesday.

They were joined in the last eight by Estonian Kaia Kanepi, who beat Russia's Daria Kasatkina 6-4 6-4 to reach her first US Open quarter-final since 2010. However, Keys bounced back in the third set to grind out the victory. I was at the Olympics with all of them. "I think sometimes I play good shots, good rallies, and then there are hundreds of mistakes and not a good shot". So the fact that I dug deep and I figured things out, you know, I came out with a win means a lot to me. "I'm not really surprised that anyone got this far, but we're all cheering for each other, excited that there's four of us in the quarters".

The 22-year-old said: 'It means the world to me to make the quarter-finals.

Yesh: Pliskova has struggled at times, but when she is on so few players can beat her. Vandeweghe can match her for power, but Pliskova is much more consistent at the end of the day.

The No. 24 seed del Potro faces sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem, with the victor getting Federer if the five-time champion can improve his 31-1 record in night matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Perseverance seems to be a common thread among the Americans left in the field.

Sam: Kanepi's story has been a wonderful sub-plot throughout this US Open but her run will end here. It was Vandeweghe's first U.S. Open fourth round. Vandeweghe will come out firing and with the crowd's support, she stands a chance to dethrone last year's finalist.

Kanepi, whose current ranking is outside the top 400 but who has been in the top 15, came through the qualifying on a protected injury ranking and has now won seven matches.

The fourth and final American to qualify for the quarterfinal round is Sloane Stephens, who dispatched No. 30 Julia Gorges of Germany on Sunday. With all her late-night drama, she has adjusted to a vampire schedule and is afraid to even see the sun. I had to sit down and all that stuff. Svitolina followed suit when she fended off three break points to clinch her service game before Keys had a comfortable hold for a 2-1 lead.

It's a feeling aided by being back in NY where she first played back in 2002.

Rafael Nadal is a set away from the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Williams and Pliskova are the only two top 10 female players remaining in the draw.

Fifteen years ago, eventual champion Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles all represented the United States in the U.S. Open women's quarterfinals. Back then she was the reigning champion, ultimately ceding her title to Serena in the last all-American final at Flushing Meadows. Keys did well to defeat Svitolina in the fourth round and should win comfortably.
