State falls in heartbreaker to Nebraska

With so many new elements and even more question marks still unanswered entering the season opener, it really shouldn't have been much of a surprise that Nebraska got off to a bit of a low start against Arkansas State.

True freshman Tyjon Lindsey, seeing his first game action in almost a year and a half, had three catches for 14 yards, including an 8-yard catch on the Huskers' second offensive play of the game. His 31 carries were the most by a Husker under Mike Riley, bettering 28 carries by Newby against South Alabama in 2015.

Nebraska redshirt freshman J.D. Spielman had an immediate answer, however, taking the ensuing kickoff 99 yards the other way for a touchdown, putting Nebraska back on top 10-7 with 4:53 to go in the opening quarter. The last time a Husker topped 30 carries was in 2014, when Ameer Abdullah rushed for 229 yards on 35 carries against Miami.

Nebraska led 17-14 after one quarter, a 15 minute frame that included a punt return for a touchdown by Arkansas State and a kickoff return for a score by Nebraska.

Arkansas State's Taylor went 63 yards for his fourth career punt return for a touchdown. Spielman also caught two passes for 44 yards.

The back-and-forth continued when the Huskers got the ball back, as Lee delivered a lovely strike to Stanley Morgan for a 44-yard touchdown to take a 17-14 lead into the second quarter. His previous highs were five receptions at Wisconsin in 2016, and 93 yards at in in 2016.

Nebraska wasted little time charging down the field behind starting running back Tre Bryant, who ended the night with a career-high 192 yards, to push the lead to eight.

Seven different Huskers caught passes from Lee.

The Huskers got a little breathing room after a 41-yard field goal by Drew Brown with 1:02 left, but Arkansas State answered right back with a 39-yard field goal by Williams in the final three seconds of the second quarter. He is eight shy of second place on the NU career list held by his brother Kris Brown.

Riley has said that a lot of effort has been put to improve sophomore punter Caleb Lightbourn as he prepares for his second season as a starter.

· Nebraska did not commit a turnover in the game, marking the fourth time in its past five games the Huskers have been turnover-free.
