City end pursuit of Sanchez

Arsenal will only sanction the sale of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City if they can bring in a world class replacement for Thursday's 11pm United Kingdom time transfer deadline, Goal understands.

The Chile global hit 24 Premier League goals for Arsene Wenger's side last season but is out of contract next summer and is yet to agree a new contract at Emirates Stadium.

The 28-year-old, who scored 24 league goals last season, is out of contract next summer and wants to play for City manager Pep Guardiola.

The 29-year-old has been prolific for City with the Argentina worldwide scoring a total of 170 goals in 255 games for the Manchester club.

But he is not guaranteed a starting role at the Etihad following the summer arrival of Bernardo Silva from Monaco.

Sterling is reportedly interested in a move to the Gunners, but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly holding out for the opportunity to sign the high-scoring Argentinian.

However, the Gunners are prepared to let last season's star man leave the club for a fee in the region of £70m if they can bring in a replacement of similar quality, with Paris Saint-Germain star Julian Draxler one of several options the club are looking at.

However, the Lemar deal subsequently fell through and we understand that Arsenal are delighted that Sanchez is staying at the club.

No formal approach has been made for Sanchez - though that is expected to happen soon.

Formerly with Barcelona, Sanchez joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 and has proved to be a superb signing. "They're in a world of trouble anyway", Murphy said on BBC MOTD2.

"His body language wasn't good when he came off - in fact before he came off you could tell he was despondent".
