The $1 million from DiCaprio's foundation represents the inaugural donation to the fund. United Way Worldwide is the largest privately funded nonprofit that is working to support those affected by the strongest hurricane that has hit the U.S. mainland since 12 years.

On his statement, Gallagher added that responding to what happened in Texas requires effort from everyone and DiCaprio's monetary donation is a representation of his effort to help the affected victims.

"United Way and other organizations are doing so much to help the victims of this tragedy", added Terry Tamminen, CEO of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. We support efforts to build climate resilient communities and protect vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems across the planet, and have supported disaster relief and victim funds in the past.

DiCaprio's foundation is now urging others to "step up and support" the relief efforts.

This isn't the first time DiCaprio's organisation has lent a helping hand to others in past disasters - money was lent to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the 2010 quake in Haiti and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Meanwhile, other celebrities have also pledged their donations for the Hurricane Harvey victims.

Sandra Bullock had earlier donated same amount to the American Red Cross to help the thousands of evacuees in Texas and Louisiana.

"We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Leonardo DiCaprio and his foundation", CEO Brian Gallagher said.

It was also reported that all funds will go directly to the recovery efforts.

"At first we were afraid, we were petrified, Kept thinking Texas couldn't live in floodwaters this high, We know you spent plenty of time preparing for this hurricane, Who could have known that it would come with so much devastating rain, But we will strive, And you'll survive", she sang in the video.
