The left-hander was pulled after Jordy Mercer snapped his 17⅓-inning scoreless streak with a leadoff home run in the eighth.

On Monday, the Royals lost 12-0 against Tampa Bay and in the process extended their scoreless streak to 43 straight innings since the home run by Moss last Thursday.

Rookie right-hander Pruitt, who gave up four home runs to Toronto in his previous start, walked one and struck out six.

The Royals ended up three innings shy of the major-league record of 48 scoreless, shared by the 1906 Philadelphia A's and the 1968 Cubs.

Kennedy was removed after Ramos' homer later that inning. He parked an Alex Cobb pitch an estimated 372 feet to left. He allowed seven runs on two homers and four doubles, two walks and a sacrifice fly.

"Excitement, relief", Merrifield said.

The Royals haven't scored since the second inning of a 3-2 loss to Colorado on Thursday and were blanked three times over the weekend by Cleveland.

Lorenzo Cain doubled with one out in the fourth for Kansas City's first hit. Inherited runners-scored: Jennings 2-2, Alexander 2-1. "I knew once we got one that things would pick up and they did".

"DJ is in a little bit of a rut right now", Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "You see some long at-bats".

Bonifacio hit his 16th homer of the season in the sixth.

"The streak, the whole thing is pretty mind-blowing", Cobb said. "We've got a month and some change left and we're three games back for the wild card". "That's a team that's got a really good offensive squad". He struck out a career-high eight and walked none over 5 2/3 innings.

"I like strikeouts", Junis said. You're not going to get a team like that to slump for that many games in a row. Kennedy has allowed 15 runs and 19 hits, six of them home runs, in 10 innings in his last three starts.

"We're getting down to the end right now, so each game is huge for us", Hosmer said. Honestly, the pitch to Whit was a good one. "I was throwing a lot of strikes and just attacking hitters". It was what he's looking for, probably, in that situation.

The Rays (66-68) finished with a total of five hits against five Kansas City pitchers. Skoglund was filling in for the injured Danny Duffy. "We are obviously disappointed in the news", Royals GM Dayton Moore said.

The Royals and Rays go at it again tonight at "The K".

Royals LHP Brian Flynn was placed on the disabled list after one outing. He will continue to assist but from the dugout. Catching coach Pedro Grifol replaced Kuntz in the coach's box at first. The Rays' Double-A Montgomery farm club clinched its third straight trip to the Southern League playoffs.

Rays: RHP Jake Odorizzi, who starts the series finale, has failed to get out of the fourth inning in his last two starts.
