A smaller, more durable Gear smartwatch

Samsung claims that both the GearFit2 Pro and Gear Sport feature advanced heart rate tracking, as well as automatic activity detection for walking, running and cycling.

In case you were still wondering why Samsung didn't unveil its "new and enhanced" wearable devices alongside the Galaxy Note 8 in NY last week, it's mainly because the Gear Sport, Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear IconX 2018 would have been massively upstaged.

The clue's in the name as to the Gear Sport's objective: this smartwatch is all about fitness and health tracking, sports fans.

Smartwatch makers seem to have figured out that it's fitness tracking capabilities that will convince people to slap a smart device on their wrist. Pricing and release information for the Gear Sport and Gear IconX 2018 will be announced in the fall, according to Samsung.

The Gear Fit2 Pro will be available for preorder on August 31st and it will be available in store on September 15th for $199.

At the same time, it is still a smartwatch and you get the same expected smartwatch features. More importantly, it's Samsung's most durable fitness tracker ever, water-resistant to 5 ATM and MIL STD 810G-rated. Ideally, you'd use that view to adjust your behavior for the rest of the day whether it's getting in another quick workout on the way home or indulging in dessert if your calorie count happens to be low for the day.

If the Gear S3 was too big and too expensive for you then this step-down in size and step-up in sports focus is a well considered proposition.

That Spotify partnership will be particularly welcome if you like music to accompany your workout. These kinds of practical features go beyond telling you to just go to the gym, and it's what makes the Gear Sport really stand out. Blue or black may not be very exciting choices, but Samsung is coming out with a variety of different color straps from leather to silicon to nylon, as well a hybrid band which is a rubber based product with leather on the top.

If we're talking Gear Sport versus Apple Watch, the divide is simple: The Apple Watch works on Apple devices, and the Gear Sport works on Android. Both Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro gain more insight through apps from Speedo, UA Record, MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun, and Endomondo. The wearable is also set to ship with a pre-installed version of Samsung Connect, the company's proprietary Internet of Things (IoT) service which provides the device with the ability to act as a remote control unit for Samsung's other products like TVs and speakers, as well as any iteration of the Gear VR head-mounted display.

The Gear Fit 2 Pro offers numerous fitness features Samsung's touting for the Gear Sport.

A handful of new fitness apps will be available alongside the Gear Sport, which will also work with the same apps that other Gear S2 and S3 watches can.

The device is equipped with a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display panel boasting a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels, which amounts to a pixel density of 302 pixels per inch and should make its circular screen sharp enough for most use cases. And because runners may be into these, Samsung added a Running Coach mode that gives you real-time, in-ear status updates as you're working out.
