It's the second time Tharanga has been suspended this year, after missing two matches in June's ICC Champions Trophy for the same offence of his side's slow over rate.

Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka's cricket manager and a selector, said the selectors wanted to stick with Kapugedera, as he was already serving as Tharanga's deputy in the series. However, it was on the 2006 tour of England that he really began to develop, especially in the one-day game, with an outstanding century at Lord's in the first match of Sri Lanka's 5-0 whitewash, and another in the final match as he and Jayasuriya flayed an opening stand of 286 in 32 overs.

The 28-year-old Thirimanne has played in 107 ODIs and will provide experience to the batting group, although his last worldwide appearance in the 50-over format came in January 2016. The third ODI will take place in Kandy on Sunday. According to sources, middle-order batsman Chamara Kapugedera leads the race as the chief candidate regardless of his average record.

"I have seen it happening to many teams". Kapugedara suffered a blow to his hand during practices but will be available to lead the side as it was only a "minor" injury. This means he will miss Sri Lanka's crucial games against India. In batting, they have got off to good starts in the series but have not converted them to big scores as wickets have fallen at regular intervals. He first really caught the eye during the Under-19 World Cup in 2004 when he cracked 117 against South Africa and then 61 in 42 balls against India in the next game. If they succeed, it will be their seventh successive victory against Sri Lanka and the fourth-in-a-row in Sri Lanka. But I think as a leading cricketing nation, we can't depend on just 15 players. "We take that forward, and we'll make sure we won't repeat the same mistakes going forward".
