Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week that a new $50 million exposition center will be built at the New York State Fairgrounds near Syracuse - and work will happen quickly.

"With the brand new exposition building, we will bring the State Fair to even greater heights, attracting more visitors and revenue to the region and helping to drive economic growth in the community", Cuomo said at the event.

Cuomo said the venue will also be used for non-fair-related events such as vehicle shows, equestrian competitions, auctions and trade shows. "The State Fair is an iconic central NY institution, and with our investments to build dozens of new exhibits, rides and attractions for fairgoers we are transforming the fair into a world-class tourist destination". The State hopes to begin construction on the center this November, generating over 700 jobs and finishing just in time for its big debut at the 2018 State Fair.

The new space will allow the New York State Fair to "better compete" for larger national and global events, including livestock, equestrian, and sports events. NY expects the effort to create more than 700 construction jobs. "And if you think about the expo space and fairground buildings, there's like 450,000 square feet".

They had submitted responses to a "request for qualifications" that the New York State Office of General Services had issued in July, and "have been deemed qualified to participate in the RFP".

A number of additional improvements are greeting visitors to this year's New York State Fair, but what's planned for next year that could transform the venue year-round. "Heavy equipment show, a horse show, the farm show we have here in winter".
