The half-hour stand-up comedy series hosted by Martin Lawrence and created by Simmons became a launchpad for a number of black comedians, including Chappelle, Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx.

According to Netflix, the special will celebrate "the impact and legacy of the long-running comedy series with surprise guests, tributes, and performances in a can't-miss evening of unbelievably amusing and raw moments". Simmons is executive producing along with Stan Lathan, Sandy Wernick, and Jesse Collins.

This fall, Netflix will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Russell Simmons' immensely important HBO stand-up series Def Comedy Jam with Def Comedy Jam 25, a new comedy special featuring just about everyone.

The first-ever Def Comedy Jam debuted on HBO in 1992 and it was a game-changer nearly immediately. Netflix says Def Comedy Jam 25 is a celebration of "the impact and legacy of the long-running comedy series with surprise guests, tributes, and performances in a can't-miss evening of unbelievably amusing and raw moments".

Netflix has usurped HBO as a home for stand-up in recent years. With it's 25 year anniversary approaching, Def Comedy Jam will now celebrate it's iconic position in comedy history.

Simmons, who's under a first-look overall deal with HBO, is bringing a new version of the "Def Comedy Jam" series back to the premium channel for a December premiere.
