Throughout the summer and into training camp Ed Orgeron said if the season started today, Danny Etling would be his starting quarterback. Etling's play at the end of the 2016 provided some hope, though Brennan is expected to be the longer term solution. A year ago, the redshirt senior threw for 2,123 yards with an 11/5 TD/INT ratio over the course of 11 games played after taking over for an ineffective Brandon Harris. Brennan is a true freshman from St. Stanislaus High in Long Beach, Mississippi, via New Orleans.

"We knew he was going to be a good player".

"It was a very spirited practice", an optimistic Orgeron concluded.

In making the announcement about Etling, Orgeron said that the quarterback looked "better" throwing since having the surgery done. There were some things he did beyond my expectations, but he's still a freshman. Key was a dominating force on the Tiger defense last season and named to first team all-SEC.

Orgeron placed freshman Lowell Narcisse at third place in the competition, but says the future is bright for both LSU freshmen quarterbacks. "We don't want to rush them when they're not ready". The injury caused nerve pain in his left leg that was said to have been severe enough to the point where he "couldn't feel" it last season.

He also said that the competition will not carry over into the season - Etling is LSU's starting quarterback. "We expect Danny to do well".
