Walmart extending grocery delivery pilot to Orlando and Dallas

To order, customers shop online or through a mobile browser at to build an online basket and place an order, selecting the most convenient time for the order to be delivered.

21, the big-box retailer announced the expansion of its online grocery delivery service to the Dallas and Orlando markets, just ahead of a meeting set for Wednesday, when Amazon's $13.7 billion bid for upscale grocer Whole Foods Market Inc.

Wal-Mart had previously tested the grocery delivery in Tampa and Phoenix areas.

"In some areas, we're trying general merchandise deliveries led by associates".

The delivery is only available for addresses near the participating Wal-Mart stores.

The program has a $10 fee for delivery and a minimum purchase of $30.

In its latest earnings report, Wal-Mart management highlighted online grocery as a bright and booming business. Another grocery chain called Aldi plans to add 400 more stores in the next year.

During the second quarter, food categories saw their strongest quarterly comparable sales performance in five years, Wal-Mart said. "We're expanding this service in many of our markets around the world".

Instacart has been another big player.

Competitors such as Amazon and Whole Foods have already bolstered the grocery business. While investors are expected to approve the offer, there are many unknowns regarding how this deal, once completed, might impact the supermarket industry.
