The VW van will return sometime in the next two years, as the I.D. Buzz. The batteries will be mounted in the vehicle floor, and Volkswagen says the Buzz's compact electric drive components mean that there's even more space inside than previously possible with gas-powered bus designs.

The Volkswagen Microbus is undoubtedly an icon of the automotive industry. Volkswagen has confirmed that it's bringing back the Microbus but the new version is going to be quite different from the original Microbus.

As a concept vehicle, many fans were enamored with the electric microbus, but did not hold any hope that it will actually make it into production. Volkswagen is aiming to introduce a completely self-driving system, dubbed I.D. Pilot, by 2025, however, so future models might be be able to cruise without anyone at the wheel.

Volkswagen confirms that like the original Microbus, the new auto is also going to be sold as a cargo van. However, during the announcement of the decision to go into production at Pebble Beach, several journalists were allowed to drive a prototype of the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz.

The Microbus, which is what the Bulli is called in America, has always been part of the California lifestyle.

The company also says the van will feature "ambient lighting inside and out". The unknowns include the I.D. Lounge and I.D. Aero.
