Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde says that Real Madrid are not "invincible", despite a 5-1 aggregate defeat to last season's double winners in the Supercopa de Espana.

Marco Asensio is a special, special player and he provided further evidence in the Spanish Super Cup first leg on Sunday.

Shorn of Neymar after his world record breaking transfer to Paris Saint-Germain and injured captain Andres Iniesta, Barca's star front two lacked the service needed to make a meaningful impact.

The 53-year-old told reporters: "There are no invincible teams, if there is one certainty in sport then it is that every single team will lose on one given day". We have no qualms in recognising the merits of the rival.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will again be dueling for the title of World's Best Footballer after their names once again headed the shortlist for The Best FIFA Men's Player.

Keylor Navas - making his 100th Madrid appearance - did not have a save to make in the first half, but he showed good reactions to get down and intercept a Suarez cutback early in the second.

Madrid were able to hold an advantage in open play for much of the game, and being able to turn to Cristiano Ronaldo and Marco Asensio on their bench when Barcelona went to Denis Suarez and Paco Alcacer made a significant different late in the game, when Real Madrid turned a late penalty equalizer into a quick victor and a third goal for safety. We have been penalised in the losses.

Vermaelen has been out of action since suffering a leg injury during a pre-season friendly with Gimnastic Tarragona on 4 August, missing the Joan Gamper Trophy against Chapecoense and the two legs of the Spanish Super Cup against Real Madrid. "We have no other choice".

The available first team players were joined by new FC Barcelona player Paulinho in his first session as a blaugrana. "It is a hard moment because in big teams this happens when you do not win".
