Yankees Place Masahiro Tanaka on 10-Day Disabled List

NY announced that they have played Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day DL with shoulder inflammation early Saturday. He said, through an interpreter, that he began to feel fatigue "a little bit towards the end where the number of pitches was gradually increasing", that "maybe that had an effect (on me) in the game", and that he was concerned that it would "effect my performance" Monday. Team doctors determined there is "nothing structural.but we decided he needs a break". The Yankees are fortunate to have starting pitching depth, as NY added acquired Jaime Garcia and Sonny Gray before the trade deadline.

Sabathia was placed on the 10-day DL prior to New York's 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, retroactive to August 9.

Girardi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Tanaka.

The leading candidate to replace Tanaka is likely reliever Bryan Mitchell, who threw four innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays. There has been no talk that Tanaka's shoulder was bothering him.

With an 8-10 record and 4.92 ERA on the year, our models project the 28-year-old for a 4-2 record and 4.13 ERA in 56-plus innings the rest of the way this season.

Tanaka's latest injury is not believed to be related to the partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow that he sustained in July 2014. That does not count the final two weeks of last season when he was shut down because of a strained right forearm. Girardi said he doesn't expect him to miss much more than the 10 days.
