Lampard believes Matic will help to transform United into Premier League title contenders this season, as he suggested Paul Pogba may be the biggest victor from the arrival of a new holding midfielder who will give him more freedom to get forward.

That is a big change from a year ago, when United played only five pre-season matches after a friendly against Manchester City in Beijing was called off.

"Midfield players scoring goals, wingers scoring goals, central defenders good in the air scoring goals at set-pieces. We always had that", Mourinho told the club's official website.

"We have a central midfielder and a striker, so obviously another player would be one coming from the sides, but we have players and if we can not strengthen then we have people we trust".

"It was very clear by showing what he did past year was not enough for him", he said.

Since then, United have splurged in the transfer market, spending almost £150m ($194.8m) on the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof as they look to improve on their league table finish last season. United finished sixth in the Premier League and weren't much of a threat domestically. "But I think naturally a manager in the second season knows the club and players better". After a first season of transition, Mourinho must stamp his authority on this team and is under a lot of pressure to deliver the coveted Premier League title.

And Mourinho admits that the Red Devils will have to deal with the weight of history on their shoulders when they return to the competition proper.

The Sweden global was United's top scorer last season, hitting 28 goals as they won the Europa League, the League Cup and the Community Shield. We'll take it step by step and be humble.

Asked if full-back was an area he was happy with or looking to strengthen, Mourinho said: "You know 25 per cent means one of four".

"The other 25 percent (of the transfer targets) will be another player playing from the sides".

"But we have lost important players to injury too, such as Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Zlatan Ibrahimovic".

"We got a central midfielder, we got a striker".

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: "It's not ideal playing there first game of the season, but on the other hand, it is brilliant and one of the greatest away games in the league". The top seven, we are all in Europe.
