Leonardo DiCaprio will reportedly star as Leonardo da Vinci in a brand new movie biopic.

Paramount Studios and Universal Pictures are now in a bidding war for the rights to the upcoming book Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson.

DiCaprio will also produce this film under his Appian Way banner.

Rumour has it, Leonardo Di Caprio was given his name after his mother felt him kick for the first time while standing in front of a portrait of Leonardo DaVinci at a gallery in Florence.

The biography in question was written by Walter Isaacson, who wrote the biography of Steve Jobs that eventually became the Danny Boyle-directed, Aaron Sorkin-scripted, Michael Fassbender-starring film of the same name.

Although he's now got an Oscar on his shelf at long last, Leonardo DiCaprio looks like he's making space for another one with his latest project sounding particularly award-friendly.

It'll also be interesting to see how it deals with da Vinci's sexuality, as many people presume he was gay - but scholars disagree whether he was actively gay, or whether he was completely celibate (none of his writings shed much light on the matter).

DiCaprio has a number of other projects lined up, including real-life horror story The Devil In The White City, based on the murders of H.H Holmes, with Martin Scorsese set to direct that film.

Da Vinci's works including The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa however the book - which has yet to be published - will focus on not just his art but his passion for science, study of anatomy, love of birds and his lifelong enthusiasm for theatrical productions, many of which ultimately informed his paintings and inventions.

Will let you know where the book landed as soon as we know.
