"I would like to pay less for the club, for everybody, but the market is the market", said the City manager.

Jose Mourinho built on that triumph in his debut campaign at the helm, with Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League successes toasted.

Following a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, the forward had a fruitful campaign in England last time around, bagging 28 goals and 8 assists, while also helping his side secure the Europa League title, as they beat Ajax 2-0 in the final and earned a Champions League spot for the upcoming season.

I rate him really highly - he was a brilliant component in the team and gave Conte adaptability.

The full back position has been another problem area and Kyle Walker, signed from Spurs, is a clear upgrade at right back and France global Benjamin Mendy from Monaco an improvement on the opposite flank.

"I am not in a position to say that "I am not happy with" - I am happy with the effort the club did".

"Do I have to be more of a leader?" I'm the same, talking, encouraging players.

"When I was young I was doing the same". I've always liked Marko Arnautovic, he's given West Ham problems whenever he's played against them for Stoke and Javier Hernandez is an extremely exciting addition to the side.

Arsene Wenger's men allowed their opponents to take 432 shots against them last season, which was sixth best in the league and well below City, who topped that category by only allowing 301.

Mourinho has sought to strengthen his squad over the summer, bringing in Nemanja Matic, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku for a combined fee of more than £145million.

Mourinho's optimism is based on three beliefs; he feels he has a more settled squad than when he arrived, that they have had a better pre-season than 12 months ago and that their rivals at the top of the division will have greater distractions in European competition this time.

"What I had in other clubs was more players scoring goals, what we had was midfielders, wingers scoring, central defenders scoring goals at set pieces", Mourinho said.

The Swede, 35, is now a free agent after suffering a serious knee injury while playing with the Red Devils towards the end of last season, yet the Portuguese is willing to discuss terms on a new deal. We're happy. Victor, too, you can see his quality straight away.

"I just think that he was very clear by showing that what he did past year was not enough for him".

"And we got a central defender that can play in many other positions, which is important. We all are. We have a good relationship".

The way Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho have been spending, the Premier League trophy should be returning to Manchester in May next year.
