Jamie Carragher launches all out assault on Liverpool's defence

Carragher voiced his concerns after the game, but Gary Neville couldn't help but aim a dig at the former Liverpool defender on Twitter shortly after Watford's equaliser.

Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp engage in a heated debate about how to solve Liverpool's problems at defending set-pieces.

The former England and Liverpool Football Club centre half insisted that personnel isn't the only issue facing Liverpool's defence and even signing Virgil van Dijk - an obvious upgrade on what they have now - wouldn't make much of a difference.

'Why Firmino is the central man I will never know, he should be blocking him (Okaka) but no one does in the most unsafe position in the six-yard box.

You can't help but feel for Carragher.

"Nothing changes, what have they done pre-season?" What have they been working on?'

"Talk about Van Dijk coming in, okay he's a good player, but it's from the side of the pitch, it's the way Liverpool are set up".

"The positions of full backs is far too high and wide, for me". One player's not going to change that'.

Van Dijk is the Reds' priority target in the final weeks of the transfer window, with the Southampton centre-back having handed in a transfer request this week.

'If you want to challenge for the Premier League then you need to concede 30 or 35 goals, so they need to take 15 goals away.

'It's nearly impossible. What defenders can do that?' Van Dijk will improve it, yeah, but one man can't change it all'. The manager has been there 18 months now but there has been no change. That's what happened on the first goal - it comes from a counter-attack.

It takes their tally to 27 goals conceded from set-pieces during Jurgen Klopp's reign - the most racked up by any of the top-six during that period. They have been for a long time'.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side knocked four past Leicester in a seven goal thriller last night, and Watford just scored in the 94th minute to earn a well deserved point against a disappointing Liverpool side who can't defend for toffee.

"That was Liverpool at their worst last season", Carragher said.

"If you're Van Dijk's agent you've got another 20 grand a week on his contract after watching that".

I think everybody's missed this mischievous "friendship".

'Sadio Mane has been one of Liverpool's best players, who nearly took the game by the scruff of the net.

'There's a bit of energy and spark when he gets the ball and it's a wonderful goal'.
