In the past few days Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted that with some 32 players in the current squad, if anything the club will look to trim their roster in order to balance the wage budget.

The French midfielder became the west London side's third signing of the summer last month when he left Monaco to join the Premier League champions.

Matic had a clear desire to leave Chelsea after contract negotiations between him and the Blues failed to bear fruit, and Wright believes Arsenal should have tried to persuade the Serbia worldwide to reject the lure of Manchester United and remain in the capital in order to follow in the footsteps of former Chelsea goalie Petr Cech who swapped west London for north London some years ago.

However, the 22-year-old is unproven in the Premier League and is still shaking off a minor knee injury as he bids to be fit for the new campaign.

"So if there was a chance he was going to go to Arsenal, that's a player Arsenal needs".

"I wish Arsenal would come in", Wright told Radio Five Live.

"They are getting rid of players who are experienced and from who you know exactly what you're going to get".

Just as hard to predict, though, is which other clubs are going to be the strongest, as we saw last season that there are some very strong contenders and that things can soon change over the course of the season.

"Van Dijk and Matic are some players you would think Arsenal would try and be sniffing around if there's a deal to be done".

"I'm not sure how it's going to go once the season starts, has he [Wenger] got something else up his sleeve?"
