Gunfight breaks out in Shopian village

Two army men were killed and three others, including a captain, injured in an encounter with militants in Shopian district of south Kashmir, the police said tonight.

Police said following specific information about the presence of a group of militants, security forces including army's Rashtriya Rifles, state police and Central Reserve Police Force surrounded Awneera village in Shopian.

As forces zeroed in the area, reports said that militants opened fire on the forces resulting in the gun battle. Sources in the police said that three militants were believed to be trapped in residential houses in Astan Mohalla of the village.

Till reports last came in, the encounter with the terrorists was on. Locals tried to hamper the counter-insurgency operation but police prevented them from going near the gunfight spot, said an official, adding that teargas canisters were used by forces.

Cordon-and-search operations have begun in the village.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir police denied that a mosque has been damaged during the encounter.

Clashes had erupted in Noorpora on Friday evening during cordon and search operation.
