Federer, who is hoping to close up on Nadal Rafael and Andy Murray the top of the world rankings, broke back against Haase early in the first set to establish a 4-1 advantage, which he never looked like relinquishing. Shapovalov started slowly by dropping the first set before settling into the match in the second.

Federer has won all seven career matches and taken all 16 sets against the 29-year-old Bautista Agut.

That set the stage for Federer to wrap up the contest in relatively short order and he will be firm favourite to down Haase in the last four of a tournament he last won in 2006.

Roger Federer used a dominant service game to beat Dutchman Robin Haase 6-3 7-6 (5) in Montreal on Saturday, setting up a Rogers Cup final against German Alexander Zverev.

That left Federer serving for the set and the 36-year-old made no mistake, holding to love in a game sealed by an ace.

"It pays off playing aggressively here, plus I feel comfortable at net, so why not spend some time there instead of slugging it out from the baseline", Federer said with a smile after the match.

Federer is undergoing a resurgence this season after it appeared to many he might be slowing down as he transitions through his mid-30s. "And then the only thing that maybe is missing is practice, but sometimes practice is overrated".

"I came from vacation, did some fitness, saw how I was feeling and said, 'You know what, I practiced so much the previous year, let's go play some matches'".

"I played a lot of good matches, especially against Dimitrov", said Haase.

Federer broke Ferrer's serve in the opening game of the third set, then saved a break point in the second game while taking a 2-0 lead.

Ultimately, Zverev played better in the key moments, finishing with two aces, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points and breaking the Canadian three times. "I think it is because I went more to the net, which was not possible against Ferrer", analyzed Federer.

Haase will face the victor between second-seeded Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals on Saturday.
