The Broncos had a big scare at Saturday morning's practice when starting defensive end Derek Wolfe was carted off the field with an apparent injury. After practice, coach Vance Joseph said that Wolfe has an ankle injury that did not appear to be serious at first look.

Wolfe appeared unable to put any pressure on his right leg as he was helped by trainers from the cart into the team's facility.

It is always my hope when National Football League players exit in this fashion that is an ankle injury. That was our problem a year ago. We need Derek Wolfe. He's our best run defender. "He's our leader up front, so you've got to have a guy like him to be able to anchor us". Inside linebacker Todd Davis missed about a week with a shoulder strain, but he returned to practice Saturday. "I hope he's all right". Nose tackle Billy Winn suffered a season-ending ACL tear Thursday in the team's preseason opener against the Bears. He was replaced on the roster by rookie defensive lineman Nelson Adams of Mississippi State. Wolfe, on the other hand, isn't expected to miss the start of the season. None will be back until September.

The 27-year-old University of Cincinnati product racked up 51 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 games during the 2016 campaign.

He also had vowed to become a more vocal presence in the locker room following the retirement of DeMarcus Ware.

Broncos will also practice Monday (in the past that practice has been open to sponsors) and then travel to San Francisco on Tuesday for two practices with the 49ers and the 2nd pre-season game on Saturday.
