That such is the fickle nature of politics that no party can take its support for granted; no victory is complete and no defeat is final. Another aspect of this particular poll was that the Congress, if it joins hands to face its opponents collectively can be a force to reckon with, something which Shah must have subsequently realised. Despite this, he said, the Congress spokesperson in Gujarat had blamed the NCP.

While Congress leader Ahmed Patel's success at pulling off victory from the jaws of defeat in the Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat provides hopes, the Nitish Kumar affair in Bihar has dealt a debilitating blow to unity efforts amongst the "secular parties" in recent weeks. Normally speaking, political parties avoid confronting each other in a Rajya Sabha election and settle in for a unanimous decision by fielding as many nominees as there are vacancies.

Q: In 1977, when you won your first LS election, Indira Gandhi and the Congress were facing a bad time. Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the NCP chief Sharad Pawar had spoken to him and said that he was unwell. I have not said that. The BJP also intimidated them. Understandably, well wishers dread the political vacuum that may arise post Sonia, given the political naivety of Rahul and the absence of a second-rung leadership; all this does not augur well for our bipolar polity either.

After all the drama that unfolded on the day of the election, the exhausted MLAs, who kept awake all night for EC's verdict and the final results, were again taken to the same Bengaluru resort for relaxation. The Congress is all set to give the BJP a fitting reply.

"We have received a request of shifting our premises to Bengaluru and we are seriously considering it so that we can relax in the resort during the 364 days of the year when we are not working", said the Chief Election Officer, talking about the one day of election when they operate during the year.

Apparently, PM Modi and his man Friday are following in the footsteps of the Congress in their attempt to keep a tenacious hold on the power structure but should the BJP do so without bothering to imbibe the attendant lessons?

Even if it is baseless, the fact remains that the Congress is unorganized. The caricaturing of the Gandhi scion is also a strategic political move. To that extent, the BJP can not be Congress Mukt. Most of the political baggage that the BJP lugs around with such chivalrous enthusiasm carries the imprint of the Congress.
