MARTIN: The president has gotten a lot of criticism from Democrats and Republicans, members of his own party, for exacerbating the tension with North Korea by making statements like the one we just heard.

"I think Americans should sleep well at night, have no concerns about this particular rhetoric of the last few days", Tillerson said as his plane stopped on the way back to the United States to refuel in Guam, the very island that North Korea threatened to target with an attack.

Trump also initially proposed a 2018 budget that would cut $340 million from missile defense programs meant to deter a potential strike by North Korea, Iran or other countries.

In a passionate tone, the North Korean declared, "I will become the nuclear warhead of ICBM to smash down the us mainland, the nest of evils".

"(Trump's) setting the standard high", Stinson said.

After a week of "fire and fury" threats from President Donald Trump, he emerged from a national security meeting stressing his hope that the North Korean crisis would be resolved peacefully.

CARDIN: Well, I - yes, absolutely, because what we need to do is get North Korea to negotiate a freeze of their program and ultimately, the elimination of their nuclear weapon program. Thank you very much for joining us.

Conyers and 63 other House lawmakers sent letter to Tillerson asking administration to "speak with caution and restraint " US politicians and the Korean-American community continue to criticize US President Donald Trump over his "fire and fury" remarks on August 8.

Lastly, we believe that North Korea's calculations is basically to preserve a regime.

In an apparent response to Trump's tweet, a statement issued by North Korea's official KCNA news agency claimed the president is "driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war". Kim also added Trump was "extremely getting on the nerves" of North Korean soldiers with comments that showed his "senility".

Trump responded. "Nobody loves a peaceful solution better than President Trump, that I can tell you".

While Trump reiterated his warnings that he would not allow North Korea to threaten the USA, he did stress his desire to find a peaceful resolution to the standoff.

CARDIN: Well, clearly, there has been some progress made with the United Nations vote on additional sanctions. One is, we don't know where all their nuclear weapons are; we don't even know how many they have. Trumps tweet that Americas nuclear arsenal is “now stronger and more powerful than ever before” is debatable. At some point either Trump is going to have to reverse himself and damage credibility, or he's going to feel compelled to execute on those threats, which could cost the lives of a lot of people. I think they would likely vote for the bill, the only issue is do they sign as a co-author. I think it just makes them more unsafe.

CARDIN: It's good to be with you.
