Garrett showed flashes of dominance in his first preseason game, and Cleveland rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer threw a late touchdown pass as the Browns rallied to beat New Orleans 20-14 on Thursday night while Saints stars Drew Brees and Adrian Peterson watched.

"He held his own", coach Hue Jackson said. He said the way he played and produced in the clutch boosted his confidence.

"I am sure he is in the locker room excited, but he will be the first to tell you, there are so many other things to clean up", Jackson said. "Some things he needs to work through and continue to get better at". Running back Terrence Magee would find the end zone from a yard out on the very next play.

Most expected Kizer to be a first-round pick entering the 2016 season, but he struggled for the Fighting Irish and fell to pick No. 52 in the second round.

If Jackson is leaning toward Osweiler, he'll need more time with the ones. "He understands the situation a lot better than I ever will". I don't want to make it all about the quarterback.

The Browns' next game will be August 21, when they host the New York Giants.

"It's the making of a quarterback and that takes time, " said Jackson. Osweiler and Kessler are what they are, but they will have to decide if they would rather go the route of letting Kizer sit in 2017 and develop before throwing him into the fire and letting him learn on the fly. New Orleans needs their defense to step up this season though if they're going to have any shot at winning the NFC South division and get back to the playoffs, and while they have some pieces capable of doing so I am not sold on the unit as a whole heading into the season.

While Osweiler missed badly on a pair of deep balls - one to receiver Ricardo Louis, the other to tight end Seth DeValve - Kizer's 2 most impressive throws of the night were deep balls that led to scores.

Jackson was pleased with Kizer's overall performance, pointing out that he made plays "with his arm, made plays with his legs and stood in the pocket with poise". He audibled out of the run and chose to go for the game victor. In three career games he's posted 442 yards from scrimmage and scored three touchdowns. He finished 11 of 18 for 184 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Stephone Anthony registered a sack in the second quarter on a blitz that forced a Browns punt.

Second year quarterback Cody Kessler played the majority of the second quarter.

Myles Garrett, the first pick in the draft, had a productive and efficient quarter of play.
