Mourinho added: "The challenge is to win more matches than we did, by scoring more or conceding less, I don't know".

United scored the least goals of the seven teams to qualify for Europe from the Premier League last season at 54, 32 fewer than the highest in Tottenham.

"We have a central midfielder and a striker, so obviously another player would be one coming from the sides, but we have players and if we can not strengthen then we have people we trust".

"We got a central midfielder, we got a striker".

"We did it earlier, so we were lucky because now it would be so much more expensive with what has happened in the last weeks". He believes he can do it again with United, but he accepts that the squad is "similar" to the one that fell 24 points short of champions Chelsea last season.

The Portuguese manager won the league title in his second full season in charge of FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea again, and feels the sequence can continue.

Mourinho has added Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic for a combined cost of £147 million but has lost Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney while Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are long-term absentees through injury.

"That group of players is going to stay for a long time at Manchester City", he said.

"I am not a hard person to work with and I understand the reality of the market, I understand the reality of the numbers - and I also understand that my club by doing 75 per cent of what I initially asked, I think the club did very well".

"That is why the club was clever to do that because we anticipated what we needed and we tried to do our best, not just for next season but the future".

"It's not just hope it's convinced that the quality of the team will be better, I have conditions to deliver a better one than the first". Chelsea, without European football, were able to run away with the title, as Leicester managed to do the season before.

Playing three at the back may enable Guardiola to associate Aguero and Jesus in attack, after he generally used a single-striker system last season following Jesus's arrival in January. I think he's capable of dropping deep or playing in an old-fashioned midfield two but he can get further forward and I expect him to be more effective this year.

"This time we are all in the same basket and it will be the same for everybody. There is no advantage for anyone".
