Liverpool insist Coutinho is not for sale

Coutinho is Barcelona's top target to replace Neymar following the striker's world record move to Paris Saint-Germain. "He has tremendous love for the club and its fans but, like Steven Gerrard and Luis Suárez have pointed out in the past, Liverpool does not let its players leave on amicable terms".

However, Souness said Coutinho might have had his head turned by Barcelona's interest and believes that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could ultimately be powerless to stop a transfer from going through.

Coutinho had already made his feelings known to the club's hierarchy - but did not want to go public, however, sources close to the situation have told me that a request has been made.

Liverpool have given out the message this summer that they are not a selling club after also rejecting offers from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho.

"The only thing I can say about this is that in life everything is about timing - whichever club asks early enough".

The former Inter Milan player, who joined Liverpool from the Serie A side for £8.5m in 2013, signed a new five-year deal in January that did not include a buy-out clause. It was a subject Klopp alluded to before learning that Coutinho had submitted his request.

Barca have also attempted to lure French forward Ousmane Dembele to the club from Borussia Dortmund but had their bid, reported by German media to be around 100 million euros, rejected by the Bundesliga side.

Coutinho will be out of action this weekend when Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign against Watford due to a back injury. "He's a doubt for Tuesday unfortunately", he said.

At a press conference to preview the Watford game, held before Edwards' inbox received Coutinho's email, Klopp admitted: "I can't keep players happy" but later expressed confidence his prized asset would not push for a transfer.

"It's not about this, Phil is not available for us, that's the biggest issue that he's not available to play".
