Roger Federer overcame a weak first set to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Spaniard David Ferrer in an earlier third-round match.

In Saturday's semifinals, the 36-year-old Swiss will face unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victor over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

Roger Federer has reached the Rogers Cup semi-finals after coming to the net early and often in a straight-sets victory over Roberto Bautista Agut on a windy day in Montreal.

"So I don't quite know with Robin what I'm going to get".

"I played a lot of good matches, especially against Dimitrov", said Haase.

He would need to win the Rogers Cup and have an equal or better finish than Nadal at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati next week to become the world No.1 on August 21.

Things started to come together for the Swiss midway through the second set, however he was still forced to save two break points when serving at 5-4, before drawing level at a set apiece.

The Spaniard couldn't serve out the set at the first attempt, however he quickly reapplied the pressure to break Federer again and win the opener in 49 minutes. "I knew that was a very big turning point", Shapovalov said.

"I wasn't the player I was before my injury", Haase said. "But, as I have practiced with him quite a bit, maybe I am better prepared than if I would have never hit with him before".

Federer is 17-0 in his career against the 35-year-old Ferrer, who was ranked third in the world in 2013 but is now at No. 33. Then this kind of eats you up inside mentally.

Shapovalov showed no sign of nerves in their first ever meeting, the left-hander playing the more aggressive tennis by utilising his huge forehand on roundhouse swings and frequently attacking the net.

Other quarter-finals later Friday have Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., against Adrian Mannarino of France and fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany against South African Kevin Anderson.

Donaldson, 20, was seeking a first career quarterfinal in a Masters Series tournament, where he is 0-13 in round of 16 matches.
