Chelsea have not followed-up rejected lowball offer for Drinkwater

Drinkwater signed a new four-year contract with Leicester City only last summer but Conte is quite determined to sign the midfielder and it will come as no surprise if he does manage to clinch a deal.

It is understood that Drinkwater is interested in a move to Chelsea, even though he may find himself behind N'Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas in head coach Antonio Conte's pecking order.

Drinkwater has emerged as a surprise target for Antonio Conte, with the Italian desperate to add depth to his squad after losing Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.

Drinkwater featured in Europe's premier club competition last season after helping Leicester win the 2015/16 Premier League title.

The reason behind this is that the Premier League side want rid of the defensive midfielder for good rather than run the risk of seeing him return from an unsuccessful loan spell.

Shakespeare was true to his word and started Riyad Mahrez despite the Algeria worldwide asking to leave the King Power Stadium.

It's somewhat surprising Drinkwater would want to go from an established starter with the Foxes to perhaps spending most of his time on the bench at Chelsea.

Riyad Mahrez, who has stated his desire to leave, is another Leicester player attracting interest, with Roma unsuccessful in a £32m bid and Arsene Wenger a fan.

"You know, I must say I opened the door for him at some stage because I know that it's important for him to play".

The France global came off the bench to head home in the 85th minute as the Gunners kicked off the Premier League season with a thrilling 4-3 win.

"I think every club is living in that reality, so we have to deal with it".

'I can only speak on how I've found him coming back, he has been focussed and driven, ' said Shakespeare.
