Arsenal's Arsene Wenger and Per Mertesacker go head to head

The 28-year-old has under 12-months remaining on his current contract with the north London-based club. Despite that, the Gunners endured a humiliating season and settled for a fifth-place finish to lose out on a Champions League spot. "I don't think I would have started him", he said.

In an interview with SFR Sport, he said: "He's an Arsenal player in the short term".

Although Wenger admitted that entering the new campaign without Sanchez is a big blow for Arsenal, he pointed out that the striker would not have featured against Leicester even if he had not sustained the injury.

Arsenal open up the new Premier League season against Leicester City at the Emirates on Friday, but Alexis will play no part in the affair due to an abdominal strain injury.

Giroud then sent the previously despondent Arsenal fans wild when he headed the 85th minute victor from a corner, Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel only managing to turn the ball onto the underside of the bar before it bounced over the line.

Mertesacker had to miss nearly all of last season with a knee injury but he was able to return in time to feature in their FA Cup final win over Chelsea at Wembley.

They defeated Chelsea again when the teams renewed acquaintances at Wembley in last Sunday's Community Shield, winning a penalty shootout 4-1 after a 1-1 draw.

Still, as well as losing him on a free, Murphy believes Arsenal might not get the best out of Sanchez as he'll look to keep himself in top condition for his next club once he's free to negotiate a move away.

Ozil is a doubt against Leicester, however, along with Aaron Ramsey, Per Mertesacker and Shkodran Mustafi, while Laurent Koscielny is suspended.

Now Sanchez is a hard choice - to sign the main contract of his life or go to another club who set themselves more ambitious goals.
