Gundogan endured a hard first season at City due to injury, the 26-year-old missing the first four matches of the season due to a dislocated kneecap, and hasn't played since December due to a knee ligament problem.

Silva, who joined in May from Ligue 1 champions Monaco in a deal reportedly worth £43million, made his first appearance for the club in a 3-0 pre-season win over West Ham United in Iceland last week. "Close to the box he has the quality to score a lot of goals and he's a fighter too so he's going to help us during the season".

In quotes published by the Daily Mail, Guardiola revealed that Gundogan may even play a small part in a friendly against Girona - which is strangely due to take place three days after City's Premier League opener against Brighton - if he is given the go-ahead to do so by the club's medical team.

"It's good for the confidence, it's good for the next game", he said. We didn't concede too much, we always created more than the opponents and that's why we are quite satisfied but the reality starts now.

The Manchester City midfielder has been sidelined since last December after he sustained the long-term problem against Watford at the Etihad stadium, and has been battling back to full fitness since then. "Maybe he'll get minutes in Girona [on August 15]".

"We don't want to take any risks". I think I'm lucky because I used to play under Pep at Barcelona and I know what he wants.

"For us it was good to have good pressing and we found it a bit hard because it was a long ball and the second ball was very important but I thought we had a good game".

"Guardiola has a lot of experience making players better and I am also with players like Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva who will teach me new things". I congratulated him and said that I'm very happy for him, that Stoke isn't that far away and that we can see each other.
