Audible, having identified a new area for growth in the canine market, is to host a series of audiobooks intent on calming dogs when they are home alone.

Audible for Dogs is being helped along with the consult of famed "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan. And it gives dogs a calm energy to distract them throughout the day, just as if you were there talking out loud yourself.

"Dogs are social animals, so they need to engage with someone and the goal of Audible for Dogs is to make dogs feel there is someone with them", Millan said.

According to Millan's research at his Dog Psychology Center in Los Angeles, audiobooks were found to potentially help dogs cope with stress, depression, and boredom at home.

The results, based on 100 puppy participants, showed that 76 percent of owners who played audiobooks in their absence saw an increase in relaxed behavior over a period of four weeks. "The sound of the audiobook is going to take the dog into a very resting state".

Milan suggests that dog owners play audiobooks that are spoken in their own gender. At the beginning of each title, Millan explains why the book is specially suited to doggy ears. The featured audiobook right now is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

Pet owners who don't have an Audible subscription but would like to try Audible for Dogs can listen to one free selection with a 30-day membership trial. Other options include Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah, A Dog's objective by W. Bruce Cameron, and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

NEWARK, N.J. -(BUSINESS WIRE) today announced the release of Audible for Dogs, an audio content destination created to foster calm, relaxed behavior in dogs.

You can start with the free Cesar Millan's Guide to Audiobooks for Dogs, because apparently this whole program is complicated enough to require an entirely separate audio guide. Audible Studios has won a Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian's memoir Society's Child, and has also been recognized with the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, most recently for Colin Firth's performance of Graham Greene's The End of the Affair.
