Los Angeles Officially Gets 2028 Olympics, Paris To Host 2024 Games

By cleverly engineering a pact for Paris to host the 2024 Games with Los Angeles waiting until 2028, the IOC boss has steered the Olympic movement from a moment of worrying uncertainty towards stability, analysts said.

The co-chair for Paris' 2024 Olympics bid, Tony Estanguet, went a bit further, saying in a statement that all the efforts made on Paris' bid "allowed us to convince the International Olympic Committee of the merits of awarding the organization of the 2024 Olympics to Paris".

The deal would make LA a three-time Olympic city, after hosting the 1932 and 1984 Games.

"Paris 2024 is proud to be working together with the IOC and our friends in Los Angeles to reach a positive solution for both cities, the Games and the whole Olympic Movement for 2024 and 2028", committee co-chair Tony Estanguet said.

A city official who declined to be name confirmed to AFP in a telephone interview that the agreement had been reached.

But the same apprehensions that spooked politicians and the local population in Boston soon became evident in Europe where three cities pulled out. This means that the 2024 summer Olympics will nearly certainly be held in Paris.

"We are very confident that we can reach a tripartite agreement under the leadership of the International Olympic Committee with LA and Paris in August, creating a win-win-win situation for all three partners", International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said in a statement released Monday. It was clear they did not want to be saddled with skyrocketing bills for hosting the Olympics without reaping numerous economic benefits anticipated.

It looks like the Olympics coming to Los Angeles for 2028 is a done deal, with Paris beating out Southern California for 2024.

Paris said in recent negotiations that it could only host in 2024 because of land availability, with L.A. saying it preferred to host 2024 but could also host 2028 if it were made financially viable for them to do so, ESPN reported.

The two cities were the only ones left in the race for 2024 after Budapest, Hamburg and Rome withdrew.

The USA last hosted the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 while the Winter Games were held in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Paris, which will also be hosting the Games for a third time, endured the disappointment of failed bids in 1992, 2008 and 2012.
