Ex-Minister Santosh Mohan Dev dead at 83

Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital here in in Silchar, Assam following kidney and other ailments.

INC India, from its official Twitter handle expressed its grief over the demise of veteran Congressman tweeting, "We condole the demise of Shri Santosh Mohan Dev". Dev was Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise in the first UPA government led by Dr Manmohan Singh. The congress leader was the Union Minister of State for Tourism and Communications during 1986-1988 and the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs during 1988-1989.

Meanwhile, Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi has also expressed her condolences and said that Dev's vast contribution to build the party in the Northeast, right from the grassroots level would always be remembered. "I am saddened at the demise of Santosh Mohan Dev, a towering and sagacious personality, who made huge contribution to the welfare of all sections of the people of the country and especially in the northeast", the Governor said in a statement here. He has been elected to the Lok Sabha seven times - five times from Silchar and twice from Tripura.

He has the rare distinction of being elected from two different states. He was also the union minister of state for steel (independent charge) in the P V Narasimha Rao government in 1991.
