As mortally wounded NYPD cop Wenjian Liu lay in a Brooklyn hospital in 2014, doctors asked his stricken wife if she wanted his semen preserved so that she might someday have his child. Sanny Liu says she never gave up the idea of having a child.

The widow of slain NYPD officer Wenjian Liu has given birth to a baby girl almost three years after a gunman ambushed and killed Liu and his partner in Brooklyn, according to WPIX.

Chen told The New York Daily News that they had been married for only three months when he was killed. "She has a lot of hair, a lot of black hair". The hospital was reportedly full of female police officers and Chen's friends on Tuesday, there to congratulate her.

Liu, it would later be revealed, was sitting in a squad vehicle alongside Ramos that day simply because he'd agreed to fill in for another colleague at the last minute.

Liu's family revealed following his slaying that the 32-year-old was inspired to become a police officer after the September 11 attacks.

At her husband's funeral, Chen paid tribute to the man she loved calling him "my hero". Liu's parents, Xiu Yan Li and Wei Tang Liu, took a picture with their granddaughter at the hospital. "I see my son in her". Both were shot by Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, 28, who later that day committed suicide in a nearby subway station. While the mortally wounded Liu was on life support and decisions were being made about possible donation of his organs, his family chose to have some of his sperm and freeze it for later use, the official said.

In the wake of the killings, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation began raising money for the heartbroken families.
