RuneScape Is Coming To Mobile, Will Be Cross-Play With PC

It's planning a substantial expansion of RuneScape's capabilities in the coming months.

Old School RuneScape will be the first title to make the jump to mobile this winter, with RuneScape to follow at a later date.

RuneScape is set in the fantasy world of Gielinor.

"The RuneScape titles will become the first mainstream and established Western MMORPGs on mobile in full and the first to deliver cross-platform play between PC and mobile platforms", the developer claimed. With MMORPGs being so time consuming and grind heavy, the ability to, say, lay in bed for an hour before you go to sleep and get in a little extra questing could go a huge way to improving players' overall experience. Old-School RuneScape, meanwhile, is based on the 2007 version of the game and was released in 2013; updates for the game are voted on by the player community. It's still maintained by the developers, too.

For those unaware, there are actually two versions of RuneScape in existence; Old School RuneScape (the slightly cruder, but still very popular original game) will be the first to arrive on mobile devices this winter, replete with fancy new touch-screen interface. While there may be question marks over how well the mobile clients are adapted to support the unique qualities of the modern-day smartphone, this is certainly a promising start to what could be a defining release for the App Store as a serious gaming platform.

"We want to take RuneScape to where people are playing, whether that's in its current MMORPG form or a spin-off franchise - that's something you'll see in the future, going onto new devices for new territories is one of the key things we're pushing towards at the moment".
