Following the shooting, dozens of soldiers invaded Nabi Saleh to conduct arrests and searches of homes and property, before the young man reportedly "pointed his gun at the soldiers who shot him dead".

Israeli daily Haaretz said three officers were hurt in the shooting; two of them suffered serious wounds and one suffered a mild-to-moderate injury. "This evening I held a discussion with the top security leadership and I instructed that metal detectors be placed at the entrance gates to the Temple Mount", he said.

Israeli security forces reported attempting to apprehend the suspect before he opened fire. "In response to the immediate threat forces fired towards the attacker resulting in his death". The first targeted a vehicle in the area of Ateret in the Binyamin region while the second targeted an army pillbox in Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah.

The terrorist is Amar Ahmed Lutfi Khalil, 34, a resident of Kfar Ayin, who had previously been active in the Palestinian Authority (PA) security services and is now a weapons dealer.

Khalil perpetrated two terrorist attacks on Saturday together with his fiancée, Ruan Ambar: one against an IDF guard post near the Samaria Arab village of Nabi Saleh, and the other against an Israeli driver traveling near the Jewish community of Ateret, also in Samaria. Tirawi's fiancee had turned herself in to Palestinian security forces, the Shin Bet said, confirming to AFP she was in their custody since late Saturday, hours before the fatal raid.

Aamer Ahmad Lufti Khalil, 34, was previously active in the Palestinian Authority security services, according to the report, but until Sunday morning's shootout, had become a weapons dealer.
