Everton sign former Southampton defender Cuco Martina

Barkley, who is out of contract in mid-2018, is heavily linked with a move to Tottenham this off-season.

Add in a gruelling training regime that would make Barkley physically stronger and fitter and he could just turn into the player that Spurs will need post-Dembele.

Speaking about Barkley's future at Everton this week, Ronald Koeman said: "At the moment it is not a clear situation".

"Everton is a big club with big ambitions and I'm really looking forward to joining this group of players and the manager as we try to step forward next season", Martina told the club website.

Daniel Levy and company won't bite, and have no intentions of immersing themselves in a bidding war.

Everton's valuation in an inflated market was £50m and that has deterred suitors so far. This is the epitome of transfer season, especially in the English Premier League where the coffers are overflowing for the major teams. Scared silly at the prospect of losing the highly touted midfielder when his contract ends for what amounts to zilch in comparison, Everton are finally succumbing to Tottenham's ruthless - yet fair - negotiation, or lack their of, tactics. Tottenham on the other hand and if you believe what you read are only prepared to pay between £25m and £30m.

"Obviously, I know the manager from my time at Southampton, so I know what he wants and he knows what I can do". Even if Spurs get the price down to £30 million, that's still too much for a player who really isn't that great and would be available on a free transfer the following summer. And he's the type of player Pochettino will be able to influence, mold and extract the best from. Barkley is also an Englishman, a mouthwatering proposition for all English supporters.

While not as silky on the ball as Dembele (who completed 84% of his take ons last season) Barkley is also an excellent ball-carrier (66% take on success) and is comfortable when in possession.
